PORB - Prairie Crane Creek Campground - Day 7
People of The Big River
Location: Crane Prairie Creek Campground
Day 7
Day seven was another travel day, we all got up super early
so we could get a head start on packing all of the campground things and our
lunches as well as having breakfast. I realized that on travel days I can’t
really sit and eat because I get really anxious that I’m not going to finish on
time or that I’ll forget something of mine. So, what I’ve been doing is just
packing myself an extra pb & j so I can eat it on the road. Anyways, we got
everything all packed and loaded up, which I think we’ve been getting faster
at. We hit the road, and it was a loooong drive, I think they said something
like 10 hours from Wellpinit to our next campground within the Deschutes
National Forest. It was pretty ok though because we got to talk to Dr. Schuster
some more and we had more service, so we were able to watch shows and play
music. Everyone was in and out of naps in our car but other than that the
majority of the car ride was pretty quiet. We were all so tired, so we were just
taking advantage of the down time. While we were driving through Oregon, I got
to see some really cool rock features and some beautiful lakes. It was so green
in some areas yet so dry coming into the state. I have been through Oregon but
never through the way we came in. I love the trees so much, being anywhere there
is trees just rewires me. In the book I am currently reading the author talks about
finding a place in the outdoors that once you get there it just instantly feels like if you were home. So much so that once you leave you instantly feel homesick, a place that
you connect with so much that it's always in the back of your mind. He says that
the best way to try and start a real connection with the earth is by finding
some place that makes you feel like that. My place has always been the forest;
the most perfect place is being in a forest right next to a really nice lake or
river so I can swim, relax, and look at plants or moss. From a really young age I knew that everything I
did had to put me on the path so I could either somehow work within or around
that kind of environment. Or at least find a job that would allow me to be able to at go on the weekends or take time off so that I am able to have my time in
nature. I don’t think I would be able to function as my true authentic self if
I wasn’t able to see trees or any kind of water way every once in a while.
Anyways, we got to the campground but not before seeing something I was definitely not expecting which was snow! Oh, my goodness I was so thrown off by that and also a little nervous because it meant that it was going to be chilly, and it was. The good thing is that the next day we were going to get to do laundry. So, I'd have some warmer clothes to change into. Most of the nights have been super cold which is so crazy to because it's literally the end of June. The last thing we did before calling it a night was collecting a water sample from the reservoir that is close to our campsite and having dinner which was like a burrito/ taco night per usual it was delicious. Some of my classmates stayed up tending to our very sad campfire situation since we weren't able to get firewood before the shop closed, but either way I think it was a pretty great way to end day 7.
